I applied for a 12 month internship through my University I was quickly contacted to go through the interview process. Coming out of university straight into an intern program was fantastic and from day one at Hays I was treated as a full-time employee, trusted, given responsibility and introduced to clients and candidates in my industry.
The opportunity to work in a FTSE 250 so early on in my career was a prospect I couldn’t turn down. Hays’ reputation in the industry is first class and I was well informed about their training and my long term ability to develop a long term career after my initial placement.
Since joining Hays I have been on a great journey. Six months into my internship I was promoted to a full 360’ role which meant I was talking to both clients and candidates daily, without supervision and I was also selected to become a talent scout which involved recruiting the following years interns from universities across UK & Ireland. Forty six people applied for the talent scout role and through sheer determination and proven success in my role I got it!
As I reached the end of my internship, I was presented with the opportunity to work part-time in an office local to my university. Again, this was yet another opportunity that I couldn’t turn down because I want to have a long term career at Hays.

I was first introduced to Hays when I returned from a gap year abroad and was looking for a career change after 10 years in the beauty industry. A family member introduced me to Hays through their personal dealings with the company and when I met the team I was impressed by the way the recruiters took the time to understand me, my motivations and my future career aspirations. I started at Hays almost two years ago after finishing university with a BA (Hons) Business degree. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do career wise but I’d heard about Hays through a friend who worked there and really enjoy the job. I started in Hays back in 2011 after graduating with a honours degree in Human Resources Management . I was attracted to the target driven and meritocratic culture that was promoted at Hays. My first year was tough, recruiting in the Construction sector in the middle of deepest recession in living memory was no easy feat! I was given incredible guidance and mentoring by both my manager and the senior consultant I worked alongside.
After having some success and getting a couple of promotions in quick succession, I decided to go down the management route. My first taste of management was managing the T&L team in our Dublin office. The initial challenge was to ensure my fee’s didn’t drop and to get the guys billing consistently.
An opportunity arose to manage the construction team, we started with four people reporting into me and with an aggressive growth plan, we have grown it to 8 direct reports. The team has done very well over the last year and the most rewarding part is to see associates grow into consistent billers.
After graduating from Leeds University with a Psychology and Management degree, I started my career in the marketing department at a leading national bank. After 4 years of learning my initial trade I decided that I wanted something more diverse and entered the world of recruitment. 12 years later, I have never looked back and have developed a far greater business acumen than I had ever imagined. I’ve fast tracked my career and progressing far quicker than many of my friends who decided to take other business career routes.
In 2005 I was based from Leeds and started as an Associate Recruitment Consultant in the marketing division. 2 years later I was promoted to Senior Consultant, which was swiftly followed by another promotion to manager where I was leading a small team. This was fantastic experience because I learnt how to manage more complex business issues, negotiation and people management. I was a very steep learning curve but one that I relished in. With continuous, proven success I started managing larger regions and diversifying into different specialisms – I was at Senior Manager level and my career options at Hays were endless. Every position I progressed into was a continual development of my personal and commercial skill sets, plus there was support and training from all areas of Hays every step of the way.
Having expressed an interest in supporting the “expert” brand value at Hays, I was given the opportunity to lead the marketing division as the UK Channel Lead in 2012 . This position further developed my credibility within the specialism and gave me the opportunity to support larger and more complex recruitment solutions, as well as driving temporary and permanent strategies internally and nationally.
In January 2017, I evolved my career further by moving into internal recruitment, supporting the Yorkshire & North East region by recruiting the highest quality talent that will support the continuous growth of the region. This role comes with its challenges but it is instrumental to the business success. I love how fast paced it is and seeing new talent join the teams, especially when some of the new starters give experienced staff a run for their money!

After a career as a cricketer, I joined Hays in 1997 as an Associate Recruitment Consultant for our Accountancy & Finance specialism, based in our Ilford office. Our organisation and structure at the time was very different to the Hays we know now, but the ability to create a unique and exciting career path remains the same.
I think being a professional sportsman had something to do with my drive to do well and progress in the business. I am and always have been incredibly competitive and with the right support, development and hard work I was able to progress quickly, taking on a variety of management roles across a number of offices and specialisms in the Home Counties.
I continued to develop my business, and when the opportunity arose to lead our Accountancy & Finance business in our Flagship London Office, I was excited to take the next step in my career. I am now Director for our Commerce & Industry in London, and responsible for 200 staff, with a diverse client base across a number of specialisms including A&F, Life Sciences, IT, Legal, HR and Marketing.
Throughout my 20 career, Hays has challenged me, supported me and developed me in equal measure. I’ve been fortunate to have a broad range of experience and responsibility along the way. It’s never dull at Hays – there is always a new challenge or opportunity to explore, and working with teams and colleagues who are equally motivated means that I enjoy what I do every day. I look forward to what the future may bring.
I joined Hays in 1995 as an Associate Recruitment Consultant based in our Manchester office. At the time I joined Hays our Manchester office was much smaller than it is today but it still offered excellent opportunities to develop your career. After establishing a new desk specialising in Architecture I realised very quickly that I would enjoy the culture of working at Hays. I also saw that with the help and the support of my managers I could take on extra responsibility very early on in my career. Hays have always offered an excellent career path if you are prepared to work hard, challenge yourself, and move for the right opportunity.
I was fortunate enough to progress quickly in both opening and running my own office within Construction & Property. This was an excellent platform to learn new skills and moved me out of my comfort zone. Throughout my career, Hays have given me the chance to work across a number of geographical regions covering a wide range of specialist businesses. Since becoming the Regional Managing Director for Yorkshire & North I have been exposed to more diverse situations when dealing with a broader client base and also giving me the chance to work with a new team.
After 22 years of working at Hays there are some things that have not changed and these are all the things that keep me motivated and challenged in my role even today! The main benefits to me are the excellent culture that exists within the organisation, that and the constant opportunities that arise means I have never had the opportunity to stand still or get bored. Like everyone has said, I enjoy working with the team at Hays, especially as these are people that share similar aspirations and goals.
At the moment our region extends to 16 offices with 220 employees so there is still lots to do, but over the coming years I look forward to constantly being challenged and adapting to whatever changes happen in our market.
